What is a keyword?

A keyword is a word or phrase a user might type into a search engine to find information about things such as products, services, events, and concepts.

If you want a more in-depth understanding of this topic, check out the FAQ section below:

Question #1: Why are keyword important in planning my website’s content?

To drive organic traffic to your website via search, you need to first get it to appear in search engine results pages (SERPs), and one of the ways you can do so is by using the right keywords in your content.

For example, if you are a skincare brand, a quick Google search tells you that your market is looking up things like:

  • Skincare steps
  • Skincare routine
  • Skincare for oily skin
  • Skincare for men
  • Skincare for acne prone skin

With this, you get a sense of the topics your content should cover and what keywords you should use. The more relevant your content is to a given set of keywords, the higher the page it is in ranks in SERPs.

Question #2: How do I choose the right keyword?

You can choose the right keywords using tools such as TextTools, which gives you a comprehensive list of all the keywords related to your brand that your target customers are using and how much they are using each one. The goal is to pick neither just the top keyword nor all the keywords on the list. Instead:

  1. Zero in on focus keywords or phrases that suit your company and offerings best. For example, there is a difference between “skincare store” and “skincare routine.” If you sell skincare products, it would be better for you to focus on the former to attract people who are ready to buy instead of users who just want to learn about the topic.
  2. Focus on the relevant keywords towards the top of the list. This would increase your chances of getting your content in front of your target audience.
  3. Steer clear of keywords that come with an expiration date. Choose keywords that have steady searches over ones that your target market is unlikely to think of in a few months. These include seasonal products or topics.

Question #3: How do I use keywords?

Here are some tips on using keywords:

  1. Bump up your searching engine optimization (SEO) by using latent semantic indexing (LSI). Using only focus keywords on their own may not provide web crawlers with enough information to make sense of your content.
  2. Avoid keyword stuffing. When it comes to keyword use, more is not always better. There is a sweet spot you need to hit to rank on SERPs without being penalised.

But how exactly do you find this sweet spot?

Well, the easiest way to do so is to use an SEO tool such as TextTools or Yoast which is designed to tell you exactly how well you are doing in terms of using your focus and LSI keywords so you can make the necessary adjustments before publishing your content.

Question #4: Where is the best place to put keywords in my content?

While you should spread your keywords out across your entire content, there are a few key spots you need to take special note of, such as:

  1. The article or page title – This is the title header at the top of the web page.
  2. The SEO title This is the page title that appears on browser tabs. It is the actual title of your article or page as far as search engines are concerned.
  3. The slug – This is the part of the URL of a webpage that uniquely identifies it. An example would be www.xyzfit.com/how-to-lose-weight.
  4. The subheadings. These are essentially markers that tell your visitors exactly what a section on your website or online article is all about.
  5. The body. This is the actual content of your web page or article.
  6. The meta description. This is the blurb about a page on your website that shows up under its URL on SERPs.
